Agency, in-house, or software? How to choose your marketing model

For most of the last twenty years, growing companies had two ways to do marketing: hire people to do it in-house, or hire an agency to do it for them. That binary is gone. A third option has arrived, and it changes the math for everyone.

At Elev8 we now offer all three, on purpose. Here is how to think about which one fits you.

Option one: a full-service agency

An agency is the right call when you need senior strategy and execution across many channels, and you would rather buy that capability than build it. You get a team that has solved your problem before, on day one, without recruiting, onboarding, or managing them.

This is what Elev8 Marketing does. We plan and run the work end to end: strategy, paid search and social, email, SEO, PR, and more. The trade-off is cost per hour and the reality that the team is shared across clients. For most brands that want results without building a department, that trade-off is well worth it.

Option two: an in-house team

Building in-house makes sense when marketing is core to your business, you want institutional knowledge to compound internally, and you have the budget to hire and retain specialists. The upside is focus and ownership. The downside is that a real team is expensive and slow to assemble, and one or two people cannot cover strategy, creative, paid media, SEO, and analytics well at the same time.

That gap, between the one marketer you can afford and the ten-person team you actually need, is exactly where the third option lives.

Option three: marketing software

The newest model is software that does the work of a marketing department, not just a tool that helps you organize it. Instead of buying hours or hiring heads, you run a system. We built two versions of this. Elev8 In-House gives a company a full marketing department in software so a lean team can produce far more. Elev8 Agency gives agencies the same engine to produce client deliverables across every account. Both run the same methodology turned into software.

The question is no longer "agency or in-house." It is "how much of this can a system do, and where do I still want humans?"

A simple way to choose

Ask three questions:

  • How much senior judgment do you need, and how often? Heavy, ongoing strategy work points toward an agency or a senior in-house lead. Repeatable production points toward software.
  • What is your real budget, fully loaded? Compare an agency retainer and a couple of in-house salaries against a software subscription. The output-per-dollar gap is often large.
  • How fast do you need to scale output? If the honest answer is "more, soon, without adding cost," that is a software conversation. We wrote a whole playbook on scaling output without hiring.

Most teams end up with a blend

In practice the smartest setup is rarely all one thing. A founder might run Elev8 In-House for the bulk of production and bring in our agency team for a quarterly strategy reset. An agency might keep its senior strategists and use Elev8 Agency to multiply how much each one can ship. The point is to match the model to the work, not to pick a tribe.

Not sure which mix is right for you? That is a five-minute conversation. Tell us where you want to grow and we will point you to the honest answer, even if it is the cheapest one.
