The top sources LLMs are pulling from in Q4 2026

For twenty years the question that decided visibility was simple: what does Google rank? Heading into the last quarter of 2026, a new question sits next to it: what do ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews actually cite when they build an answer? When a buyer asks an AI which tool, agency, or product to choose, the engine pulls from a small set of trusted sources to decide what to say about you. Knowing those sources, and earning a place in them, is how brands stay visible inside AI answers.

The pattern is clearer than most people expect. A synthesis of six independent studies covering more than 680 million citations found that the top 15 domains capture roughly 68 percent of every citation the major AI engines produce, with Reddit alone accounting for about 40 percent (Everything-PR Citation Source Index 2026). This article ranks those sources, gives a source-by-source guide to earning a mention in each, and shows how to see where your own brand is landing.

The most-cited sources, ranked

Bar chart ranking the most cited sources for LLMs in Q4 2026: Reddit 100, Wikipedia 72, YouTube 61, LinkedIn 54, Forbes 41, Quora 26, Medium 21, G2 18, Capterra 12, Gartner 9.

Relative AI citation share, indexed to Reddit = 100. Synthesized from multi-study aggregates across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. Figures are approximate, vary by platform, and shift month to month. Sources are listed at the end of this article.

Two things about this chart matter as much as the order. First, each engine has its own preferences: ChatGPT leans on Wikipedia, Perplexity leans on Reddit and research sources, and Gemini and Google AI Overviews favor YouTube and Google properties (Contently). Reddit sits in the top five of every major engine, and the rest of the mix moves around it. Second, this is a long tail: even a top domain rarely exceeds about 5 percent of a single platform's total citations, so the goal is presence across several sources rather than dominance of one.

A source-by-source guide to getting your brand mentioned in LLMs

Your own website is roughly 25 percent of the citation equation. The other 75 percent lives on trusted third-party sources (Contently), so most of the work happens off your domain. Here is how to earn a place on each one.

Reddit

Reddit is the single most-cited domain across AI engines, and one study found domains with heavy Reddit presence earned about 3.9 times more ChatGPT citations than domains with little. Build genuine presence in the subreddits that map to your category, and share specific, experience-based answers and frameworks. Discussion depth is the signal, and openly promotional posts get filtered out fast.

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is near-foundational for ChatGPT, appearing in a large share of its top citations. Earn the independent, secondary-source coverage (press, research, third-party reviews) that supports a well-cited entry over time. If your brand already has a page, keep every factual claim current and sourced. Writing your own page tends to get reverted, so build the coverage that makes a neutral entry possible.

YouTube

YouTube showed the strongest single correlation with AI visibility in one 75,000-brand study, because engines read transcripts and descriptions. Get your brand into video reviews, comparisons, and tutorials from creators in your category. Clear spoken mentions, chapter markers, and structured descriptions all lift how well an engine can extract the reference.

LinkedIn

LinkedIn was the biggest mover of the year, climbing from around eleventh to fifth on ChatGPT between late 2025 and early 2026, and it leads for professional and B2B queries. Treat it as a citation channel: have named senior leaders publish substantive analysis, and keep the company page active with regular operational content. Different engines pull from member posts and company pages in different proportions, so both efforts compound.

Forbes and earned editorial

Forbes sits in the top five across platforms, and its ChatGPT citations roughly doubled after September 2025. Engines treat established publications as confidence-weighted sources, and they can distinguish editorial mentions from sponsored content. Prioritize earned coverage in category-relevant publications over paid placements.

Quora

Quora is the second Q&A community after Reddit and carries one of the highest citation multipliers of any community platform. Publish long-form, expert-credentialed answers to the real questions buyers ask. A slightly more polished tone works better here than on Reddit, and depth beats volume.

G2 and Capterra

Software review platforms function as third-party validation for vendor-comparison and recommendation queries, and one study found domains listed across multiple review sites earned 4.6 to 6.3 citations on average versus 1.8 for absent ones. Claim and complete your profiles, respond to reviews, and encourage detailed, structured reviews with use case, pros, and cons. Specific mid-range reviews carry more weight than generic five-star ratings.

Gartner and analyst sources

For enterprise and B2B evaluation queries, analyst coverage carries outsized authority even when its raw citation volume is smaller than the community platforms. Engage the analyst process, keep your briefing materials current, and pursue inclusion in the reports and grids that buyers reference when they compare vendors.

Medium

Medium remains a strong long-form source, reaching engines through both retrieval and training pipelines. Use it as a syndication channel for substantive, well-attributed long-form content, and keep your primary publishing on your own site. Republish selectively rather than posting original work there first.

Plan for constant movement

These rankings move fast. ChatGPT's Reddit citation share swung from roughly 60 percent to about 10 percent within weeks in 2025 before recovering, and the top sources reshuffle as platforms tune their retrieval (Semrush). The concentration holds, the identities inside it rotate. Two habits keep you safe: diversify across the top sources so your visibility survives any single policy change, and audit your AI visibility every quarter so you are working from this quarter's reality.

See where your brand is landing

Knowing the sources is half the picture. The half that changes your plan is knowing whether AI engines mention your brand, in what context, and which sources they pull from when they describe your category. That is exactly what Elev8 CMO is built to surface. Its research and audit engines run your category questions across the major AI answer engines, show where you appear and where competitors are winning the citation, and turn the gaps into a prioritized plan across the sources above.
